Frequently Asked Questions

We welcome students from all faculties to the UNB Formula Racing team. While being an engineering student may provide some general background knowledge, many of the car design concepts are not taught in class. As long as members have a willingness to learn, there’s no reason why students from any faculty at UNB can’t join.

  • The acronym FSAE stands for the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers. Formula SAE is an event which provides post-secondary students with the opportunity to apply real-world engineering principles and gain hands-on experience before completing their degrees. Teams work as though they are an engineering design firm creating a prototype car for the average weekend racer. Cars are built all over the world with the goal of creating the fastest, most reliable, and economic design possible. Formula SAE asks students to build a car that can withstand various events that test a car’s handling, straight line speed, and endurance. But there is more to the competition than racing.

Teams also prepare cost, design, and business presentations which give them points toward the overall competition. There are 4 on track racing events and 3 presentation events which each award points to the teams. Whichever team has the most overall points at the end of the competition is the champion.

UNB Formula Racing isn’t just a team trying to build a fast car. It is a group of students learning and collaborating together to design a car that we can all be proud of. If you have a willingness to try new things you are in the right place.

We have resources available so you can learn as much as you need.

  • What is important is that all members define a commitment level that the team can count on. If you feel that you can commit two hours a week that's great! All that we ask is that you put in the time you have committed to the team.

Many hands make light work. We understand that everyone has different schedules and commitment levels. While there is no set requirement for the time you should spend on the car design and build, we recommend 5-7 hours per week.

All students have weeks that are busier than others. We will work with your school schedule so that you are not burdened during the busy times of the semester.

  • The heads of the UNB Formula Racing team are the team captains. After the team captains we will have the leads of the sub-teams. We have multiple engineering sub-teams along with a marketing and business sub team.

All members fall under the team captains with general members falling under a sub-team lead that is responsible for individual tasks. We also have executive members. These are senior members who are great points of contact for any questions you may have.

Being a new club, it is important to remember that there is a great opportunity to take a leadership role in the car if you are interested. There are many jobs that need to be done on the car that require leaders.

Please see the current team under the about us section to see who is holding what current roles.

  • We ask that all members attend a weekly meeting on Saturday at 10am. This meeting will cover the general development tasks of the car, upcoming team events, and general team updates.

There will also be Engineering sub-team meetings held at a different time during the week. This meeting time will be mutually decided by the sub-team members.

The team will follow a design schedule throughout the year that will detail when various designs need to be done. It is hoped to have a moving car by the end of this academic year.
